Training in Nigeria  ·  2 min read  ·  Updated 20 September 2026

If you are searching for free skills training, government empowerment programmes or starter pack schemes, this page is for you. We run a paid training centre, so read this knowing that. We have still tried to give you the straight answer.

Free training does exist

It is not a myth. Federal and state government skills programmes run regularly, and people genuinely complete them at no cost.

How to find them

  1. Follow the National Board for Technical Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment announcements directly rather than through third party sites.
  2. Contact your state skills development agency. Most states have one, though not all of them publicise well.
  3. Ask at your local government secretariat, where constituency schemes are often administered.
  4. Watch for accredited centres near you advertising sponsored intakes, because funded programmes are usually delivered through existing centres.

Be careful with sites charging a fee to register you for a free government programme. If a scheme is free, the application is free.

The honest limits

Three things are worth knowing before you build a plan around a free scheme.

Demand hugely exceeds supply

When the federal TVET initiative opened, applications ran into the tens of thousands within days. Most applicants to most schemes do not get a place. That is not a criticism of the programmes, it is arithmetic.

Timing is not yours to control

Schemes open when they open. If you need certification for a job offer or an application with a deadline, waiting for an intake that may or may not come is a difficult position to be in.

Certification is not always included

This is the one that catches people. Some programmes deliver training without a trade test certification at the end, so you finish with skill and nothing an employer can verify. Ask before you enrol whether the programme includes Federal Ministry of Labour trade test certification, and at which grade.

A free programme that leaves you without a certificate has given you half of what you came for.

What we would actually advise

Apply for the free schemes. Genuinely. If you get a place and it includes certification, take it.

At the same time, do not put your plans on hold waiting. If you are already working in a trade and you only need the certification rather than the training, that is a much shorter and cheaper route than a full programme, free or paid. Read how the trade test application works.

And if you do decide to pay for training, ask what our cost page tells you to ask, of us and of everybody else.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free vocational training in Nigeria?

Yes. Federal schemes including the TVET initiative and the National Directorate of Employment, state skills agencies, development partner programmes and constituency schemes all run free training, though demand greatly exceeds available places.

How do I apply for free government skills training?

Follow the National Board for Technical Education and Federal Ministry of Labour announcements directly, contact your state skills development agency, and ask at your local government secretariat. Never pay a third party to register you for a free programme.

Do free training programmes include certification?

Not always. Some deliver training without Federal Ministry of Labour trade test certification, which leaves you with skill and nothing verifiable. Ask before enrolling whether certification is included and at which grade.

Is it worth paying for training if free programmes exist?

It depends on timing and on whether you need training or only certification. Free schemes are worth applying for, but places are limited and intakes are irregular.
