How to find an accredited centre, and what to ask before you pay.
Trade test examinations can only be conducted by centres accredited by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. Sitting a test anywhere else produces a document that is not in the records.
Every state has a Federal Secretariat with a Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment office inside it. That office can tell you which centres in your state are currently accredited, and it is the most reliable source because accreditation changes.
It is also where certificate verification is done, so it is worth knowing where it is regardless.
The Skills Development and Certification Department operates Skills Upgrading and Vocational Training Centres across the six geopolitical zones, including in Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Kaduna, Bauchi, Lagos, Oyo and Nasarawa, with further centres in Anambra State at Alor and Ifetedunu.
Contact the Ministry office in your state for what is currently running near you, because provision changes and we would rather you checked than took a list off a website.
Private training providers can also hold accreditation to conduct trade test examinations. The advantage is that you train and test in the same place, so you are not travelling to sit the examination after you finish your training.
The risk is that not every centre advertising trade test certification actually holds the accreditation. That is worth checking rather than assuming.
That fourth question catches people regularly. A centre that trains but does not examine sends you elsewhere to be assessed, and the cost and the journey are yours.
