Trade Test by Trade  ·  2 min read  ·  Updated 20 September 2026

Solar is the fastest growing trade in Nigeria and the one with the widest gap between the number of people doing it and the number doing it properly.

Most installations are sized by guessing. The customer is back within a year with a dead battery bank and no idea why. That gap is the opportunity, and certification is how you signal you are on the right side of it.

Which trade category applies

There is usually no separate solar category in the Federal Ministry of Labour trade test system. Solar and inverter work is generally examined under electrical installation, so that is the category your certificate will name. Ask your centre to confirm before you enrol, so there are no surprises when you read the document.

That is not a downgrade. Electrical installation is the foundation of the work, and a certificate naming it tells an assessor you understand circuits rather than only how to mount a panel.

What is assessed

Because it sits under electrical installation, the assessment covers the electrical fundamentals as well as the system work:

Why certification matters more here than it looks

Solar is an expensive purchase. A customer spending several million naira wants somebody accountable, and increasingly asks. Estates and businesses commissioning systems ask harder.

There is also a funded programmes angle. Federal and state solar training schemes appear regularly, and providers delivering under them generally need accredited certification behind the training. Holding a graded certificate positions you for that work rather than watching it go elsewhere.

Where to sit it

ServHub Training holds Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment accreditation and examines on site in Port Harcourt. We are also partnered with Growatt and Pylontech on equipment, so you train on what you will actually meet in the field.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a solar installer trade test in Nigeria?

Solar and inverter work is generally examined under electrical installation in the Federal Ministry of Labour trade categories rather than as a separate trade. Confirm with your centre which category your certificate will name.

Do I need to be an electrician to install solar?

Solar work is electrical work. The assessment covers load calculation, cable sizing, protection and earthing alongside the system components, which is why it sits under electrical installation.

Does certification help with government solar programmes?

Providers delivering under funded schemes generally need accredited certification behind the training, so a graded certificate positions you for that work.
