Trade Test by Trade  ·  2 min read  ·  Updated 20 September 2026

Nigeria runs on generators and every one of them eventually breaks. The people who fix them mostly learned by trial and error, which is why the same set gets repaired four times in a year.

A trade that sits across two others

Generator work is half engine and half electrical, and that is exactly why most technicians are weak at one end of it.

A mechanic who does not understand the alternator changes the engine oil and hands back a set that still will not hold load. An electrician who does not understand the engine replaces the AVR on a set with a fuel problem.

The technician who understands both ends holds servicing contracts. The one who understands one end chases call outs.

Which category applies

Depending on the focus of your work, generator technicians are generally examined under the mechanical or the electrical trade categories rather than a dedicated generator category. Ask your centre which applies to the work you intend to do, because the category on your certificate is what an employer reads.

What is assessed

Where the business is

Estates, schools, hospitals, filling stations, banks and small businesses all run generators and all of them would rather pay a monthly servicing fee than deal with a breakdown. Those contracts go to technicians who can demonstrate competence, which in practice means certification.

It is recurring income rather than one off repairs, and it is the difference between a trade and a business.
