What is assessed, and why certification opens fleet and contract work.
Most mechanics in Nigeria learned under an oga, by watching and repeating. That produces real skill and no paperwork, which is fine until a fleet operator asks who on your bench is certified.
The federal trade test curriculum for automotive work was developed with the National Automotive Council, so this is one of the better defined trades in the system.
The practical component puts a vehicle or a component in front of you:
The written or oral component covers engine theory, systems, measurement, tolerances and safe working.
The mechanic who can read a fault code and reason from it earns several times what the one who cannot earns, on the same vehicle.
Modern vehicles are full of sensors and control units. Roadside diagnosis by feel worked when engines were simple. The grade you can hold reflects how far past that you have moved, and Grade I is where workshop and fleet work sits.
Fleet and contract servicing is the real prize. Companies with vehicles want a workshop they can put on a maintenance contract, and certification is usually a condition of that. It is the difference between waiting for walk in repairs and having monthly work booked in.
