We are not going to quote you a salary figure. Anybody who does is guessing, because the range inside every single trade in Nigeria is enormous and the averages are meaningless.

What is useful is knowing what actually separates the artisan earning a little from the one earning well, because those differences are things you can change.

1. Whether the work is booked or hunted

This is the biggest single difference and almost nobody talks about it.

An artisan waiting for somebody to call has unpredictable income, dead weeks, and no negotiating position when work does come. An artisan on a servicing contract with an estate, a school or a business has money arriving whether anything broke that month.

The same skill, sold as a contract instead of a call out, is a different income entirely.

Contracts generally require certification, because the organisation signing needs to justify who they put on the premises.

2. Whether anybody can verify you

Two welders, same ability. One has a Grade I certificate, the other has fifteen years and nothing on paper.

On a private job they compete on price. On a contract bid only one of them can be named. On an overseas application only one has a file. The certificate is not what makes you good. It is what lets somebody who has never seen your work take the risk.

3. Diagnosis versus replacement

In every repair trade the money sits in diagnosis.

The electronics repairer who replaces whole boards earns the price of the board. The one who finds the failed component earns for skill the customer cannot get elsewhere. Same with mechanics who read fault codes, air conditioning technicians who find the actual fault rather than topping up gas, and generator technicians who understand both the engine and the alternator.

4. Specialisation inside the trade

Broad trades pay broadly. Narrow ones pay narrowly and better.

The specialisation is usually one grade up, not a different trade.

5. Whether you can quote

Plenty of skilled artisans lose money on jobs they did well, because they priced from instinct, forgot wastage, or did not charge for the second trip.

Costing a job properly is a learnable skill and it is worth more than another year of technical practice to most people reading this. It is part of every programme we run for exactly that reason.

What this means practically

If you already have the skill, the fastest thing you can change is the paper. Certification opens contract work, and contract work is the difference between income and earnings.

If you are starting, learn the trade and the business together. The technical skill gets you the job. The other four things decide what it pays.

Frequently asked questions

How much do artisans earn in Nigeria?

The range inside every trade is enormous and averages are misleading. What separates higher earning artisans is whether work is contracted rather than hunted, whether they hold verifiable certification, whether they can diagnose rather than replace, how specialised they are, and whether they can cost a job properly.

Does a trade test certificate increase earnings?

Indirectly. Certification is generally required to be named on contract work and on bids, and contract work produces more predictable and better paid income than one off repairs.

Which trades pay best in Nigeria?

Within any trade the specialisation matters more than the trade itself. Pipe and positional welding, industrial electrical work, correct solar sizing and commissioning, and finished joinery all pay above the general level of their trades.
